Topic:High-Performance Steel Connections - The SidePlate Approach

Learning Objectives:

A Berkshire Hathaway company, SidePlate Systems, Inc. specializes in steel building designs, providing safe and efficient structures through innovation. SidePlate Systems unites proven structural integrity with maximum design versatility and efficiency through a suite of high-performance steel frame connection technologies.

The presentation will focus on the use of moment frame connections in construction today. A brief overview of “conventional” moment connections, and their problems that were exposed by the 1994 Northridge earthquake, will be provided along with a look at where the industry is at in terms of moment connection design. Attendees will get an introduction to the SidePlate Connection Technology developed from those lessons learned. The SidePlate introduction will also focus on how connection geometry and load transfer impacts overall frame performance when subjected to seismic, wind, and blast loadings.  The presentation will also provide a summary on the factors impacting moment frame design and selection, with specifics relating to SidePlate Connection Technology. The presentation will conclude with examples showing the impact these framing selections have on the overall construction cost of the structure’s lateral system.
