STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION OF ARIZONA
SPECIAL WEDNESDAY MEETING JOINT MEETING with SEAoA - AzACI - AZ ICRI Chapters
The City of Tempe has just completed the replacement of the Downstream Dam. The project had many challenges to overcome and Adam Gordon with PCL Construction and Gannett Fleming, Inc. will discuss some of the obstacles and details of what it took to complete such a project.
The new hydraulic steel gates; the 18,000 cy of Roller Compacted Concrete; 900' long cast-in-place diaphragm wall; and the 1,400' cement-bentonite wall required for the dam foundation; the unique design mixes; nighttime work and strategic control joint placement was key in controlling cracking. The 70 million pound Roller Compacted block is a critical component to keep the dam in place to prevent uplift pressures. These and many other features and challenges will be discussed.
This project is an Award Winner in this years upcoming Award Banquet for ACI/ICRI.
