SEAoA Excellence Awards: Call for Entries

There is no fee to enter and projects are not limited to those in Arizona, so be proud and show us what you got!

Truly outstanding projects may also get forwarded on to compete for the National Excellence awards with entries from other SEA organizations across the country.

SEAoA Convention and Conference: Early Registration NOW OPEN

We’re excited to announce that Early Registration is now open for the 2025 SEAoA Convention and Conference! These Early Registration rates will expire April 23rd. This year, we will be at the Casino del Sol Resort & Casino in Tucson, AZ on June 5^th through 7^th. This convention will follow our familiar format with multiple presentation tracks, promising to keep everyone interested with a total of 13 PDH credits offers. We are pleased to announce our 58th Anniversary SEAoA State Convention and Conference at the WeKoPa Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona!

We will be returning to the Scottsdale/Paradise Valley Doubletree on June 15^th through 17th. The Speaker Committee has secured world renowned Dr. S.K. Gosh to be our keynote presenter and is working on a great lineup of other speakers covering a range of topics. This convention will follow our familiar format with multiple presentation tracks, promising to keep everyone interested with a total of 12 PDH credits offers. A full lineup of presentations will be announced and posted to our website when it has been finalized.

YMG Nominations

The Younger Member Group is looking for nominations for the next YMG Chair, Treasurer, ASU Rep/Student Liaison and the Social/Networking positions. A YMG promotes an energetic environment that encourages professional advancement and information exchange within the structural industry. YMG assists Young Engineers as they build their careers in the Structural Engineering Profession, offering training, networking, and community outreach opportunities to its members. The YMG Past-Chair, John Heck, will be available to mentor the new YMG leadership team as they build the Younger Member Group community. Each position is a one-year term, limited to those 35 years old and younger, and responsibilities include:

• YMG Chair -

Lead quarterly YMG meetings
Coordinate and attend main chapter meetings
Recruit and retain members
Help plan construction site visits or vendor demonstrations
Assist all other positions

• Treasurer -

Manage YMG budget and keep track of attendance
Keep up to date contact information
Recruit and retain members
ASU Rep/Student Liaison -

Reach out to ASU student groups to encourage participation in the YMG
Recruit and retain members

• Social/Networking -

Plan and coordinate quarterly social events.
Coordinate combined social with AIA
Setup other events besides HH
Help out with Engineering Days at the AZ Science Center
Recruit and retain members

SEAoA Convention and Conference 2022: Early Registration NOW OPEN

We are pleased to announce that Early Registration for attendees is now open for our 56th Anniversary SEAoA Convention and Conference. These Early Registration rates will expire on April 1st.

This year, the Thursday full day session will be a single track featuring Dr. Bijan Aalami presenting on Detailed Design Methods for PT Elevated Slabs. This full day Thursday workshop session is also included (with lunch provided) in your registration for a total of 12 PDH credits offered for the 2022 Convention.

NCSEA Young Member Summit Scholarships

The SEAoA would like to recognize and congratulate two of our younger members, Cesar Castro and Chase Carpenter Young, on recently being awarded NCSEA Young Member Scholarships to the upcoming NCSEA Summit! A list of all award winners and Cesar and Chase's applications can be found at the bottom of the post.

Each year NCSEA awards Young Member Scholarships for the NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit. The scholarship competition is open to any current member of an NCSEA Member Organization who is under the age of 36.

First-time scholarship recipients will receive free registration to the Summit which includes all educational sessions, access to the trade show, and an invitation to the NCSEA Awards Event, as well as a travel stipend of $1000 to use toward transportation and hotel costs. Previous recipients will be awarded a returning scholarship that will cover Summit registration only.

As required by the Bylaws of the Structural Engineers Association of Arizona an annual vote by the Full and Associate Members of the Association is required to elect the Board for the current 2021-22 membership year. Full information on the composition of the Board of Directors can be found in the bylaws Article V.

SEAOA thanks the firms that submitted entries this year. As noted by one of the judges there were a number of “really solid” entries this year. This is evidenced by the fact that nine entries were submitted and all nine received an award. Please be advised that although there were six Excellence awards, none received an excellence recommendation from all the judges which is the criteria for SEAoA to pay the entry fee for the upcoming NCSEA 2020 Awards program.

2021 Convention Announcement

As a follow up to the previous post regarding the cancellation of the 2020 SEAoA Convention due to COVID-19, the SEAoA Board has rescheduled the convention to the summer of 2021. The official dates for the 2021 SEAoA Convention are May 13th-May 15th. The Convention will be held at the Hilton El Conquistador in Tucson, Arizona.

As the speaker schedule is finalized for 2021, details and registration will be announced in the coming weeks. We look forward to a great Convention and Conference next summer and we wish healthy and safety to all our membership and sponsors.

SEAoA Convention: COVID19 Response

Over the course of the past few weeks, the SEAoA Convention Planning Committee has been monitoring the status of the COVID-19 virus and determining our plan of action in terms of the 2020 SEAoA Convention planned for May. Due to recent guidelines and orders from the government, the SEAoA Board has decided to postpone the Convention until next year, June 2021. We will be in touch with those members, speakers and vendors that have already registered to discuss options.

We appreciate your continued support and involvement in SEAoA and we look forward to future networking opportunities in the coming months. We hope for healthy and safety for all our membership.

2nd Annual Egg Drop Competition & Fundraiser Recap

The Structural Engineers Association of Arizona (SEAoA) hosted their 2^nd Annual Egg-Drop Competition and Fundraiser on Friday, January 31^st, 2020 at the University of Arizona. The competition is dual-purposed: (1) to raise money for SEAoA's Annual Student Scholarship given to deserving University of Arizona students interested in structural engineering, and (2) to provide a networking opportunity for professionals and students in the fields of engineering, architecture, and construction. The evening was a fun-filled 'egg'-citing way for teams to take on the great challenge of creating an apparatus to protect a raw chicken egg from cracking when dropped from the second landing (over 35 feet high) of the Civil Engineering courtyard staircase.

Each team, consisting of two professionals and one or two students, was given a bag of the same random materials and had only twenty minutes to hatch an idea and create a device to protect their egg. The competition is intended to parallel that of the structural engineering world, to protect the public (the egg) and to provide an economical (light weight) design.

Some teams designed a parachute to slow the fall while others chose materials to absorb the impact. A few decided to combine both concepts. As the deadline approached, some teams were scrambling to finish while others patiently waited to show off their design. All teams had great 'egg'-spectations for their personal creations.

After the twenty minutes were up, each device was weighed before it was dropped. The winner would be the lightest device to sustain the drop resulting in an unbroken egg. Audible "oooohhhs" and "aaahhhhhs" followed with applause filled the courtyard after each successive team had "l'eggo their eggo" from the stair landing. A SEAoA judge meticulously determined whether each egg was un-cracked, cracked (no leaking), or completely obliterated. After 13 dropped eggs, 6 eggs were un-cracked, 4 were cracked, and 3 had been annihilated. Team 5 crushed the competition with an apparatus weighing 79 grams (31 grams less than the previous year’s winner). The winners included two University of Arizona civil engineering students: Adam Bishop and Sergio Corona, and two Professionals from M3 Engineering and Technology Corp.: Allan Ortega and Austin Urton. The winners each received a $50 Amazon Gift Card.

In addition to all of the fun and networking, there were some awesome raffle prizes donated by our sponsors. The event was a huge success, and approximately $1150 was raised for the students! SEAoA would like to extend a special thank you to the University of Arizona ASCE Executive Team, and Jessica Carson, S.E., from Martin, White & Griffis, for creating this event last year and lending a hand this year. NCSEA Summit Scholarship Awards

The SEAoA Board wants to recognize and congratulate two of our SEAoA Young Members, Anthony Wulfers and Victoria Flys, who received scholarships to attend the NCSEA Summit this year in Anaheim. Victoria and Anthony's bios are highlighted below:

Victoria Flys is a structural EIT at Meyer Borgman Johnson and received her B.S.E and M.S.E in Civil (Structural) Engineering from Arizona State University. She is an active member of SEAoA's Younger Member Group, serving previously as University Outreach/Student Liaison chair. She is also on the NCSEA Steering Committee for the Timber Strong Design Build Competition at the 2019 NCSEA Summit and is a volunteer with the ACE Mentor Program in Phoenix.

Anthony Wulfers been a structural engineer for Caruso Turley Scott Structural Engineers for 7 years. While there, he has worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from single story commercial like OHSO in downtown Gilbert up to an 11 story tower for Carvana in Las Vegas. Anthony graduated from Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, MO with a MS in 2012 and BS in 2010. He has attended a few of the events put on by the young member group and was a participant on the trivia team that won our regional two years ago.

City of Tucson and Pima County to Adopt 2018 IBC/IRC

As of January 1, 2019 all projects submitted in City of Tucson and Pima County will be required to designed to the 2108 IBC/IRC with COT/PC ammendments.

OV Amendments (different than COT/PC) are online and their new codes start 1/4/19.

Marana's are not ready yet and their adoption date is not set ("hopefully in January").

2014 Phoenix ACE Mentor Program - Call for Volunteers

The Phoenix ACE Mentor Program is looking for Structural Engineers to volunteer as Mentors for High School Students participating in the 2014 ACE Mentor Program at Metro Tech High School. The ACE Program is designed to introduce high school students to the wide range of career opportunities open to young people in architecture, construction, engineering, and related areas of the building design and construction industry. Students in the ACE program work closely with their mentors on hypothetical projects that provide hands-on experience in solving the types of design, engineering, and construction challenges industry professionals confront every day.

The program is specifically looking for 2 engineers that would be able to participate on a weekly or almost weekly basis. WCSEA Round-Up - Announcement

SEAoA Members,

Every two years the Western Council of Structural Engineers Association (WCSEA), which we are all members of, has a WCSEA Round-Up. These Round-Up’s provide a great way to get continuing education, great networking with engineers who practice in the Western US and have some leisure time in some very interesting places in the West. In fact SEAoA has hosted the Round-Up numerous times in the past.

This year the Round-Up is being hoisted by SEAH at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, Kohala Coast, Hawaii, October 2- 5, 2013 which is on the dryer side of the Big Island. Attached you find the Registration form and the Tentative Program. You will notice that the programs are only in the morning since I guess it is difficult keep focused when the waves are crashing a 100 yards away. In addition since SEAoA is a member organization of WCSEA you get to go per the Member Price for this event as with any other event the other member organizations hold. David Flax

Dave Flax of The Euclid Chemical Company has a Civil Engineering Degree from RPI and over 35 years experience as a field engineer, a contractor, and a researcher with the Corps of Engineers. He has earned his CDT and CCPR from CSI. He has specialized in concrete and has had dozens of articles published. He was awarded the Extra Yard Award by the SCCP for his 30+ years of service to the concrete industry. He is on a number of national organization committees including the “Guide Specifications Committee". He has spoken on this topic and others at The World of Concrete.

Jason J. Thompson

Jason Thompson is the Vice President of Engineering for the National Concrete Masonry Association. His duties and responsibilities include overseeing the technical activities of the association including research and development, design, construction, and testing standards development, design resources and tools, and creating and delivering seminars and lectures covering these subjects. Jason is also active in the development of building codes and standards for masonry structures and systems where he represents NCMA and the masonry industry through the Masonry Alliance for Codes and Standards. Prior to joining NCMA, Jason worked at a private engineering consulting firm in Washington State. Upon completing his graduate studies in 1997, Jason began his career with NCMA in the laboratory as the Association’s Research Engineer. Since that time Jason has served in several evolving capacities within NCMA focusing on the structural performance of concrete masonry, research and development, codes and standards, to his current role as Vice President of Engineering. Jason has served in several leadership and executive capacities in various forums including: Chair of the Masonry Alliance for Codes and Standards, Executive Committee of the Masonry Standards Joint Committee, Technical Activities Committee and Board of Directors for The Masonry Society, technical advisor to the Code Resource Support Committee, and the Technical Coordinating Committee of the International Code Council.

Michelle Kam-Biron, PE, SE
Ms. Kam-Biron is a California licensed structural engineer and Director of Education for the American Wood Council (AWC) where she is expanding continuing education resources for architects, engineers, and building officials as well as coordinating the development of university level wood design course. Before joining AWC, she worked nearly five years in the wood industry as the Senior Technical Director – National Lead Mid-rise/Multi-family Construction for the Wood Products Council initiative WoodWorks. Additionally, she was a Structural Engineering consultant and Executive V.P. of Harris Engineering, in California. She has over 20 years of experience managing and designing a wide range of projects of various structural materials as well as Division of State Architect contract plan review. Ms. Kam-Biron graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a BS in Architectural Engineering. She is a certified Earthquake Disaster Assessment volunteer, a member of APA - Professional Associates Program, APA Standards Committee PRG-320 on Cross-Laminated Timber, and the International Code Council. She is an active member and past Director of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California and is currently a volunteer on the Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo Architectural Engineering Advisory Board.

Rafael Sabelli, SE
Rafael is Director of Seismic Design at Walter P Moore. He is the co-recipient of the 2008 AISC T.R. Higgins Lectureship, and is a member of the AISC Task Committee on the Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings, the ASCE 7 Seismic subcommittee, and the NCSEA Seismic Code Advisory Committee. He is the coauthor (with Michel Bruneau) of AISC Design Guide 20: Steel Plate Shear Walls, as well as of numerous research papers on conventional and buckling restrained braced frames. Rafael was the 2000 NEHRP Professional Fellow in Earthquake Hazard Reduction, and is the Past Chair of the Seismology Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of California. Rafael is currently the Vice President of the Structural Engineers Association of California.

Joshua B. Kardon, PhD, SE, F. ASCE
Principal Structural Engineer Josh Kardon has been in continuous practice since 1973 and established Joshua B. Kardon + Company in 1978. As an expert in the area of a Structural Engineer's Standard of Care, lecturer, and active member of numerous professional organizations, he remains in the forefront of his profession. Josh volunteers his time and expertise to young people in the community.

Jim C. Barnes, PE
Jim Barnes has worked for 20 years for the State of California’s disaster agency, soon to be named the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services). Mr. Barnes has served as the lead statewide coordinator for the Safety Assessment Program (SAP) for five years, and has given around 150 classes in the subject since 2004. He has been invited to give classes in Colorado, Arizona, and Massachusetts, and presented part of the keynote address for the “Buildings at Risk” Structural Engineers Association conference at the University of Southern California in 2011. He traveled to New Zealand in June 2011 as part of an Applied Technology Council team to investigate safety assessment methods and issues in response to their February 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Mr. Barnes has co-authored articles on safety assessment, and participated in a webinar version of the SAP Evaluator class for the National Conference of Structural Engineers Associations in May 2012. Mr. Barnes also serves as the lead for preliminary damage assessment for potential federal disasters in California. Prior to working for the State of California, Mr. Barnes worked in construction design in California and Hawaii.

Attendees will learn fundamental concepts behind model review and approval and first-hand case studies from users who have successfully integrated steel models into the review and approval process. Further, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the use of models in specific applications from personnel from both Tekla and SDS/2.

The workshop commences at 7:30 a.m. with a complimentary continental breakfast; the workshop will conclude at noon. Workshop attendees are eligible for 4 PDHs /.4 CEUs.

Pima County Adopts 2012 IBC Codes Effective Jan 1, 2013

Paragon Structural Design

Paragon Structural Design, HDR, and Ehrlich Architects teamed up to design the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building IV (ISTB IV) for Arizona State University (ASU). The project team was tasked with designing a 9 level 293,000 square foot facility that would accommodate the needs of ASU’s School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) and the Fulton School of Engineering. The building is intended to encourage trans-disciplinary research between SESE and the Fulton school, respect and enhance the ASU campus and surrounding environment, and promote science, curiosity, and exploration within the community. Construction of ASU ISTB IV was completed in April 2012 and the building is on track to receive a LEED Certification level of Gold.

A reinforced concrete structure was chosen as the basic structural system for the facility. Concrete structures have inherent durability, fire protection, energy, acoustic, and vibration benefits that are of great importance to a facility that houses offices, classrooms, high-tech laboratories (wet, dry, general purpose, and sensitive instrument), and an auditorium under. The structural column grid layout was chosen with input from the architect to accommodate flexibility of the lab modules and facilitate ASU’s goal of creating lab spaces that are able to adapt and evolve with state of the art research.

The Unisource Office Tower is a $65M, LEED Gold, Corporate Headquarters in Downtown Tucson, with 3 levels below grade parking, and 9 levels above grade office space. The foundation is a concrete mat with the largest single pour of 2,800 cubic yards (300 trucks from 3 different batch plants). The basement walls are 12" shotcrete over a soil nail tie back system. The floors are a Post-Tensioned concrete banded beam and slab system, which optimized the floor to floor heights at 14’. 28,000 cubic yards of concrete; 5,320,000 pounds of reinforcing steel; 380,000 feet of post tensioning cable was used.

M3 Engineering & Technology Corporation

Palm Beach County, Florida, selected Barbara Grygutis to create a useful public space for their Centennial Plaza. M3 engineered the centennial bell tower and shade canopy. Aluminum pipe columns support the canopy front while the back rests on a curved masonry wall. A clerestory truss down the middle carries aluminum beams radiating outward like palm fronds. The artist, engineer, and fabricator encountered various challenges including: hurricane wind loads, analysis and design of welded aluminum, connection detailing and limited fabrication tolerances for erection. The shade canopy construction ran smoothly and the completed artwork will serve the community well.

Call for Spectra Papers on New Zealand Earthquakes

Through a collaboration between the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) and the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE), Earthquake Spectra will be publishing a special issue on the 2010-11 Canterbury, New Zealand, Earthquakes. Papers are invited on the engineering seismology, geotechnical, lifelines, structural engineering, and social and economic sciences aspects of the earthquakes and their effects. Papers on topics such as research using data from the earthquakes, code and guideline development based on observations from the earthquakes, and new emerging lessons for policy and regulation are strongly encouraged.

Abstracts must be submitted in advance of the papers. The guest editors may recommend the modification or combination of abstracts for the purpose of maintaining the specific focus and length requirements of the issue. Papers must cover material beyond what has been published elsewhere, including but not limited to the NZSEE Bulletin and SSA special issues on the Canterbury earthquakes.

Abstracts of one page or less must be submitted by September 20, 2012, by email to liz@eeri.org with the subject indicating “Abstract Submission for Canterbury Earthquakes Special Issue.” Prospective authors are encouraged to contact guest editors with expressions of interest, opportunities for collaboration with other authors, and questions regarding scope. SEAoA presents 2012 Future Cites Award

We would like to thank SEAoA member Richard Dahlmann and all of our SEAoA Member judges for participating in the Future Cities competition this year. Richard has spearheaded this effort for the last 3 years and built it into something that the SEAoA can be proud of and a fine example of our mission to reach out to the community and educate them about our profession.

The SEAoA is proud to have given a society award at the recent Future Cities competition for the Phoenix region. Future Cities is a program set up for 6th, 7th and 8th graders across the nation and is designed to encourage engineering to our youth. Around 300 teams started this competition in September and 92 teams made it the regional finals.

The participants engage in a several month long expedition to compete in the Future Cities program. They have several deliverables that are due over a four-month timeframe. First, the students design a city using Sim City software. They all have the same guidelines and the cities are judges according to how well they meet the criteria. The second deliverable involves the students writing an essay and narrative about their city. Third, they build a physical model of a portion of their city. This is to be built to scale, and the students have a maximum budget of $100. Finally, they make a 7-minute presentation to a team of judges regarding their city.

Several awards are presented to the winning teams. The top team in the overall competition represents Arizona at the national finals in Washington D.C. In addition to the overall competition awards, over 20 society awards were handed out. These are from all the varying engineering and architectural societies across the valley.

The SEAoA award was given for “Most Innovative Structures” with the criteria being the best use of structural principles taking into account unique structural loading due to local conditions (earthquake, wind…).

I need to thank our terrific team of judges. Our team included Pam Kotrys, Elena Badilla, Cody Haptonstall, Ben Crellin and myself. This team put in several hours reviewing essays and narratives in order to narrow down our choices from 92 to around 20. Many team members then went to the main City of Phoenix library during the week before the competition in order to review the models that were built. This narrowed the field further. On Saturday, January 28, we had the opportunity to meet with these teams and view many of their presentations. From here, the final selections were made and our winner was decided.

The SEAoA’s award was presented to the city named “River Valley”. A team from Payne Junior High School in the southeast valley constructed this city. River Valley is to be situated along the San Andres fault. Their residential area was located underground and was protected from seismic activity using the same principles that protect missile silos. They also have a dome with solar panels mounted to it. These solar panels move around the dome, tracking the sun for the most efficiency.

Congratulations to River Valley- hopefully we have some future structural engineers in the making.

From this competition, and other interactions with students, it is apparent that structural engineering is not well known to the public. Participation in events like this and the Engineering Day activities at the Arizona Science Center help introduce young minds to Structural Engineering. Encounters like this may open up opportunities for students that they didn’t even know existed before.

Please consider participating in events like these. It does make a difference.

SEAoA Board of Directors Presents New Association By-Laws

For the last year, most of the focus of the Board of Directors has been on updating our by-laws in an attempt to reorganize our Association to better serve its members. This effort is now complete, and the Board has adopted a new set of by-laws that they are asking all members to review. All current SEAoA members will be asked to vote on these revisions in June.

Over the past few months the SEAoA state board has taken careful consideration of membership comments and operational issues to update the SEAoA Bylaws. The proposed new Bylaws are a significant improvement over the existing. I fully endorse these proposed changes. Please take the next 20 days to review these changes, and will you be asked to vote on the changes at the end of the month. o President may be nominated, by vote of the Board, for a succeeding term. If sitting President is re-elected, then Past President position will be filled by an additional Director from a Chapter not affiliated with that of the President.

o Nominations for Directors shall be Full or Associate members

o Elections shall take place prior to the end the Association's fiscal year

· Article VI: Responsibilities of the Board - no significant changes.

SEAoA Announces New Web Site Presence

The SEAoA is excited to announce its new web site and member self service portal. The new site at www.seaoa.org includes up to date news and information on Association activities and events. All upcoming events are listed on the site and on-line registration can be completed without leaving the site. News of interest to members will be posted on an ongoing basis to the News page, and there are several open discussion forums in which members and non-members can participate.

Members will enjoy a new level of self service by logging into their new on-line account. Once logged in, a member can quickly register for events without having to re-enter their information, and can view their membership and renewal status at any time. Members can enter and maintain their own profile information and can choose what information is available to the public in our new on-line member directory. All of the members financial transactions, including event registrations and membership dues, are available to viewed by the member at any time.

Additional features include a searchable member database, committee pages, and public and private discussion areas and document storage.
